What actually is Mobile Marketing?

Before we discuss the different variables of mobile marketing, it's important to understand what is and how it plays out in business and online.

Theres more to mobile marketing than just posting an ad here or there and waiting for a response. It consist on different channels of distribution to promote a product or service. It's inevitable that you run into it granted you use social networks on your mobile device. The truth of the matter is we store so much data on our phones and that much of it is shared on social networking platforms. It is inescapable for these network giants like Facebook to not utilize them for tailored advertisements.

Don't expect this to slow down as mobile data traffic is projected to increase by 700% going into 2021 from the past 5 years globally. Interestingly enough if you read my last blog, half of this traffic is driven by video content.

Is there such thing as too much? I'm not sure but time will tell. It's a tough question to pose on a universal platform like Facebook. But we know, and have seen products and services over saturated with marketing.

Mobile Marketing strategies for small businesses

If done effectively, marketing with mobile can increase your brand awareness whilst improving conversion rates. Small and niche businesses should be taking advantage of mobile marketing since mobile devices are responsive for over 40% of the transactions that people complete online.

Why I'll be relating these strategies to small businesses is because mobile marketing is most beneficial for smaller businesses. This is due to its affordability and ability to target niche audiences.

Firstly we have to mention social media marketing simply because it is a leading marketing channel. It is free to create social network profiles for your business and grow from there. What also makes it advantageous is its scalability. People are spending more time on social media and therefore are spending more money on their brands through it.

To further mention, even if you aren't selling directly through social media, you are still increasing brand awareness.

Another popular strategy used by smaller businesses to market via mobile is through text and email marketing. This is extremely useful for acquiring brand loyalty with repeat purchases and customers. Choosing the right times to market via text and email is a crucial step that needs to be considered in making sure you get a good email open rate. The average open rate for companies is 20% regarding emails.

Even if your business has a open rate lower than 20%, text marketing is still a great option to utilize to increase conversion rates. A customers phone is almost always on them so it is quite an easy way to reach customers. A neat way to optimize this process is texting out promotions or deals to prompt the customer. Statistically this a great channel to market on the mobile as the average SMS marketing click-through rate is at 36%.

Using mobile for its advantages

One thing mobile advertising and marketing offers that a lot of traditional avenues don't is its level of interaction between the brand and its customers. Today we see more brands and even larger scale companies using social media to reach to its customers and interact on a personal level.

The biggest advantage this offers to the brand is the constant feedback loop. Over time the feedback loop between audiences and company's has become smaller. Brands have been able to capture greater customer insights because of so and consequently improved the customer experience.

I've been able to capture a glimpse of the benefits for mobile marketing. But I wanna know if there's something I've missed? Leave a comment if so, perhaps there's another element crucial to optimizing mobile marketing.

    1. Thanks, yeah I didn't really get into any ethical implications but that's a good point because there definitely are some. I think in one of my previous blogs I talked more about ethics if you want to check that out.
