How to run your own Google Ads without spending money on a PPC agency. (LAUNCH YOUR FIRST CAMPAIGN!)

A quick disclaimer, investing money into a performance based PPC (Pay-per click) agency is not a bad investment and will indeed help you and your business. But maybe your budget is small and you would rather build your own PPC campaign.

Lets find out how to do so.

What you need

Firstly, the good thing about starting your own agency is that you don't actually need much at all. Its a very simple process since we have the internet nowadays with automation.

Before we get started you need to make sure you have a legitimate business name and register your business under your state. Its different depending on where you live and how the tax works. Generally speaking you should be able to register your business under a government body website, like this one for Victoria, Australia.

Alright, we also need a computer to run Google ads. A secondary monitor is also a great asset to utilize to utilize to improve your efficiency, though its not entirely necessary but nevertheless quite cheap second hand. Oh and one more thing...you want good Internet. Your not going to want to continue doing this if it takes 5 minutes to refresh a page.

For the ads themselves, you can definitely use a free PPC tool. However, I would highly recommend investing in a Google Ads optimization tool such as Optmyzer is you want to get the most out of ads. This will enable you run tests, manage bids, acquire data and much more. But probably most important, a software like this will save you time!

Not including your computer or internet, this is really the only investment you need to make upfront.

Steps to take

We got to make a few accounts and set up some things before we launch our campaign. Firstly, a google account needs to be made for a gmail. We also make want to make a google analytics accountgoogle search console account and a google ads account. The reason being for these accounts is that they work really great with each other.

We want to now link your Google ads account to Google analytics and Google search console which is done under the two tools. Next is to set up a tracking phone number for your ads and also your page.

You now should conduct keyword research to organize a keyword list to also help compile your ad groups. With your Google Ads account, you want to set up conversion tracking aswell as a thank you page on your page. This is attached to your page that customers land on to keep them informed and can be as simple as leaving your phone number if they need to address you for any service issues.

Now were going to add a google analytics code and a conversion tracking script to the thank you page so that we know when someone has filled out the thank you page in the statistics.

Since we've setup the thank you page we can form the landing page in which our service or product is being sold. We can just make one page for now and duplicate or customize more pages down the line. Make sure your page is mobile friendly! We also want to add the google analytics code to this landing page before publishing it.

You can create more landing pages with the tabs to feature more products/services.

Now we want to make our Google Ads for our ad groups, ensure that they are tailored to our target audience! When done your ready to upload your Google Ads and keywords to your ad groups.

Before we launch a campaign is it great to test your page and tracking phone number aswell as go over your settings. Coupon codes can also be added and are a nice way to acquiring returning customer and conversion rate.

And finally, launch your campaign. But stay active and observe your campaign. Watch the ads and make subtle changes if need be. But also allow enough time to go by so you can acquire statistics on your campaigns performance before making changes.

This can no doubt seem like a daunting process. But like anything, you will learn along the way and get out what you put in. Overtime you find this process to be easier and boost the performance of your business tremendously.

Let me know if there is something I missed! Good luck and don't be scared to try new things.

  4. Hey Jords,
Really interesting action you have taken on delineating how to start up Google Advertisements. I feel that people don't understand holistically the true value of ads on such a big platform like Google. People that don't understand usually tend to fear these things as they see them as a big risk and very expensive. Great work in detailing the real picture. Are their any other websites you would recommend to post ads on?

    1. Depends on what your advertising and the target audience. There's a strong tendency to stick with social media but its getting to a point where it can be saturated. But that also depends on the industry or product itself. Besides Google and social media networks, bing can work also for your ads. But do research to understand where your consumers spend most of their time and why.
